The limiting factor for heavier snow accumulation will be a layer of above freezing temperatures near the surface which will cause some of the snow to melt, especially during the morning. Ground surfaces will also be warm due to the recent mild temperatures and should make it difficult for snow to accumulate on roadways. However, if a heavy band of snow develops, it could cause temperatures to fall and significant accumulations of snow to occur on roads. A potent southern storm has dropped 5.5 inches of snow in Concord, Alabama, and at least 5 inches in Columbus, Georgia.
Now the storm off the Carolina coast will zip toward the Canadian Maritimes overnight and Monday. Winter storm warnings are in effect from the Carolinas to Maine.
Overnight, heavy snow will quickly expand northward from the western and central Carolinas to southern New England and then into Maine Monday morning.
UPDATE: By 6:00 tonight the snow has stopped in North Georgia and just about everything is slush. Pulling out of the driveway this evening, it was a bit slippery due to the slush and water.
