Cooling is masking the effects of global warming

Shifting ocean currents that cause temperatures to cool in some areas of North America may be masking the effects of global warming. This is actually being reported by the Liebnitz Institue of Marine Sciences.

April 30 (Bloomberg) -- Parts of North America and Europe may cool naturally over the next decade, as shifting ocean currents temporarily blunt the global-warming effect caused by mankind, Germany's Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences said.

Average temperatures in areas such as California and France may drop over the next 10 years, influenced by colder flows in the North Atlantic, said a report today by the institution based in Kiel, Germany. Temperatures worldwide may stabilize in the period.

This is really a stretch! Human activity is causing global warming. PERIOD! If we actually measure temperatures that are cooling or stabilizing, then it is not due to a lack of warming, it is just nature masking the problem. This is the most rediculous thing I have ever heard. These people want there to be catastrophic warming so much that they will stretch so far for a explanation to refute data that doesn;t support their model.

The study was based on sea-surface temperatures of currents that move heat around the world, and vary from decade to decade. This regional cooling effect may temporarily neutralize the long- term warming phenomenon caused by heat-trapping greenhouse gases building up around the earth, said Richard Wood, a research scientist at the Met Office Hadley Centre, a U.K. provider of environmental and weather-related services.
``Those natural climate variations could be stronger than the global-warming trend over the next 10-year period,'' Wood said in an interview. ``Without knowing that, you might erroneously think there's no global warming going on.''
The Leibniz study, co-written by Noel Keenlyside, a research scientist at the institute, will be published in the May 1 issue of the journal Nature.
``If we don't experience warming over the next 10 years, it doesn't mean that
greenhouse-gas warming is not with us,'' Keenlyside said in an interview. ``There can be natural fluctuations that may mask climate change in the short term.''

And maybe those natural fluctuations are actually nature's way of adapting and adjusting to compensate for the warmer temepratures. Climate is variable. It always has been and it always will be. Warm weather is not bad and actually leads to goo dthings such as longer growing seasons and better survivability compared to cold temps.

Now it seems alarmists have found another way to explain away the data that indicates that the warming is over - IT'S NOT OVER, YOU JUST CAN'T SEE IT RIGHT NOW!!!!

She took strike one. And then the senior did something she had never done before -- even in batting practice. The career .153 hitter smashed the next pitch over the center field fence for an apparent three-run home run.

The exuberant former high school point guard sprinted to first. As she reached the bag, she looked up to watch the ball clear the fence and missed first base. Six feet past the bag, she stopped abruptly to return and touch it. But something gave in her right knee; she collapsed in the base path.

"I was in a lot of pain," she told The Oregonian today. "Our first base coach was telling me I had to crawl back to first base. 'I can't touch you,' she said, 'or you'll be out. I can't help you.'"

Tucholsky, to the horror of teammates and spectators, crawled through the dirt and pain back to first.

Western coach Pam Knox rushed onto the field, and talked to the umpires near the pitcher's mound. The umpires said Knox could place a substitute runner at first. Tucholsky would be credited with a single and two RBIs, but the home run would be erased.

"The umpires said a player cannot be assisted by their team around the bases," Knox said. "But it is her only home run in four years. She is going to kill me if we sub and take it away. But at same time I was concerned for her. I didn't know what to do...
"That is when Mallory stepped in."

Mallory Holtman is the greatest softball player in Central Washington history. Normally when the conference's all-time home run leader steps in, Pam Knox and other conference coaches grimace.

But on senior day, the first baseman volunteered a simple, selfless solution to her opponents' dilemma: What if the Central Washington players carried Tucholsky around the bases?

I am outraged that TIME magazine has compared the "war" onglobal warming to our nation's great world wars -- and that TIME defamed the iconic photo of the Marines landing at IwoJima by putting a tree in the hands of the Marines!

We are seeing more warnings about Cooling

Here is another story warning about Global Cooling due to a lack of sunspot activity.

Sunspot activity has not resumed up after hitting an 11-year low in March last year, raising fears that — far from warming — the globe is about to return to an Ice Age, says an Australian-American scientist.

Physicist Phil Chapman, the first native-born Australian to become an astronaut with NASA [he became an American citizen to join up, though he never went into space], said pictures from the U.S. Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) showed no spots on the sun.

He said the world cooled quickly between January last year and January this year, by about 0.7 degrees Centigrade."This is the fastest temperature change in the instrumental record, and it puts us back to where we were in 1930," Chapman wrote in The Australian Wednesday. "If the temperature does not soon recover, we will have to conclude that global warming is over."

We are seeing more and more reports regarding the threat of Global Cooling and even an impending Ice Age. The global warming alarmists right away jump to their usual claim that the data is being "cherry-picked" while discounting the effect that the sun has on our environment.

The next few years will be very interesting because we are about to live through a world scale experiment. Radical environmentalists have been using inaccurate computer models to make claims that public policy needs to change. I am an advocate of modeling - keeping in mind that if the model cannot predict the current, observed results of a process, then it is not accurate and is not legitimate in predicting future trends. The next few years we will live the effects of the low sunspot activity. A real life experiment that will prove just how much the sun affects our climate is underway. Not a computer simulation, not a calculated effect, a real life experiment.

Cooling is a real concern - more people die from excessive cold each year than from excessive heat. Warmer temperatures increase the growing season, cooler temperatures shorten it. We have technology for irrigation, desalination of sea water, flood protection. Once the temperatures drop, real climate effects can cause serious problems.

Earth Day - Environmental Benefits and Unintended Consequences

Well, today is the 38th Earth Day - the 38th anniversary of the start of the modern environmental movement. I remember celebrating Earth Day in 7th grade (that would have been in 1977). We had an outdoor festival during Science Class. If I remember correctly, I finagled a way to miss all of my classes that day doing my part to help the environment. We had the local paper (The Home News) there listening to us kids discuss how important it was to clean up the environment and to save the planet. Solar energy was the big thing then and we had a solar cooker there to warm up our raw hot dogs - and we thought those raw hot dogs were the best we've ever tasted.

Many good things have come from an increased awareness and a acceptance of our responsibility regarding the environment. We truely are stewards of this planet whether we recognize that responsibility or not.

In the 70's I remember:

• The dome of smog that engulfed New York City - you could see a greenish, brown haze covering the city.
  

• The foam on top of the Raritan River - brown and gray, over a foot thick
  


• The dead fish in that same river and going fishing but throwing the fish back because we didn't want to risk eating them.

Many other environmental problems existed at that time - Times Beach, Mo; Love Canal, Lead in the air from leaded gasoline etc.

But you know what... WE SOLVED THESE PROBLEMS!

Our rivers are clean now. The air is fresh. Several species that were in danger of extinction have come back and are thriving. We have reduced pollution to a mere fraction of what it was back then.


But it came at a cost.

One of the biggest side effects of the environmental push was the banning of DDT. Even back then the scientific data showed that the supposed environmental effects of DDT were in fact not the case. So after we in the prosperous west used DDT to rid ourselves of malaria spread by mosquito, we banned the product and prevented people in Africa, India and Asia from doing the same. Today a child dies every 30 seconds due to malaria - a disease that was eradicated in the west using a chemical that we do not allow others to use.

Now the focus is on global warming. Once again only part of the data is being considered in order to push a predetermined agenda. Those of us who are skeptical of mankind's causal effects on global warming are accused of "cherry picking" the data while the global warming alarmists ignore the effects of the sun, El Nino/La Nina Multi-decadal cycles in both the Atlantic and Pacific and the fact that the temperature has not risen since 1998.

Well what does it hurt to try to regulate CO2 emissions on the chance that the burning of fossil fuels is causing the temperatures to rise? Consider the following:

1. Compact Fluorescent lights are being legislated to replace incandescent bulbs on the basis that they consume less energy - Yet they contain mercury which is highly toxic and could cause serious environmental and health problems if a broken bulb is not disposed of properly.
2. Ethanol is being pushed as an antioxidant to replace MTBE in reformulated gasolines - we have seen how the cost of gasoline has risen over the last few years. Much of this is due to the cost of oil and the increased demand in developing countries. Much of it is due to the tax burden place by state and local governments. But some of the increased cost is due to the reformulation, including the use of ethanol, to reduce pollution. The summer formulations are even more expensive as more costly additives are brought into the mix to minimize ozone formation during the hot summer months.
3. Studies have shown that ethanol actually releases more CO2 for less energy produced than gasoline.
4. Ethanol is less efficient overall than gasoline. Less miles per gallon/ less energy per unit mass.
   
5. The increased demand of ethanol has caused a multi-fold rise in food costs as more corn is being diverted for use as fuel instead of as food.
6. Farmers are switching from wheat and other food crops to grow corn for energy use because they can get more money for the corn - higher demand.
7. There have already been food riots in Haiti and other poor countries as food shortages result.

The problem is that along with making good changes in how we view and take care of the environment, extreme positions are also included in the decision making. This not only dilutes the credibility of those who want to be environmentally responsible, but focuses the efforts on off-the-wall, unreasonable, wacko ideas:

-Regulate the very air we exhale - CO2 is not a pollutant
-Cause the deaths of millions by banning the chemicals that made life possible and bearable here
-Increase world hunger by using a food source as fuel and reducing the amount of land available for food production.
-Eliminate the ability of indigenous people to farm to grow food to feed their people by placing a higher value on the rainforest than on the people who live there.

The list goes on and on. No other group has caused as much damage and destruction as radical environmentalists. There is a lot we can do to continue to clean up our world. Industry MUST design processes and facilities for zero emission - no pollution - just CO2 and water - the natural products of combustion. We have to be responsible. We do not have to be idiots.

Instead of passing legislation to reduce CO2 generation, which in my opinion is impossible, we need to put in place the infrastructure to adapt. If the seas are going to rise, build and improve our levees. If the temperatures are going to increase, invest in water distribution systems and air conditioning in developing areas.

Continue work on alternate energy development to reduce our dependence on foreign energy and reduce emissions of real pollutants - CO, NOx, O3, hydrocarbons, not CO2 or water. We need to focus our efforts on real environment improvements rather than the imaginary crisis that has been invented as the latest effort to redistribute wealth and punish success.

The ocean contributes to air pollution

This is an interesting piece of information. From CHExpress http://www.cheresources.com/chexpress/chexpress08_8.shtml a Chemical Engineering news and bulletin board resource.

Apparently the sea salt from the ocean spray from the Gulf of Mexico reacts with nitrogen oxides in the atmosphere which form ozone. The contribution of the sea salts is that the NOx does not drop out of the atmosphere at night but apparently, instead, remains viable for further reaction and ozone production the following day.

If this is happening in Houston, it is certain to be occurring in New York, LA and other coastal cities as well and may help to explain some of the issues that coastal cities have in fighting air pollution.

(OK let me be perfectly clear to all of the cynics ... I am NOT saying that the ocean causes pollution.. please read the article and pay attention to the science discussed.)

Air pollution

The dirty air in Houston, Texas has often been attributed to cars, trucks, ships and oil refineries. Now, it is believed that sea salt is a part of the equation because of an intense chemical interaction of sea salt, sunlight and polluted air. Sea salts, by contributing chlorine to the atmosphere, influence ozone formation, but could be vastly underestimated.

Ozone generally is formed during the daytime when nitrogen oxides react with other chemicals in the air. However, after dark, without sunlight to stimulate the production of ozone, the nitrogen oxide compounds left over generally fall out of the atmosphere. It is believed that the addition of aerosolized sea salts in the air binds up the nitrogen oxide, keeping them afloat and preserving them for the next day’s sunshine.

Proof that Global Warming is over

Thanks to the BBC, we now have proof that global warming has ended. As a matter of fact, the temperatures in Antarctica are so cold that the penguins had to leave.

BBC1 viewers will see the penguins not only take flight from the Antarctic wastes, but fly thousands of miles to the Amazonian rainforest to find winter sun.

"The film reveals nature's stunning glory in exciting and unexpected
ways, so much so that it defies belief," said Mr Jones.

The programme is being presented by ex-Monty Python star Terry Jones, who said: "We'd been watching the penguins and filming them for days, without a hint of what was to come.

"But then the weather took a turn for the worse. It was quite amazing. Rather than getting together in a huddle to protect themselves from the cold, they did something quite unexpected, that no other penguins can do."

So far only the Daily Telegraph is brave enough to publish this new discovery of nature. Not only do we see nature reacting to excessive cold that proves that global warming is over, but we see Darwin's theory of evolution in action in response to environmental pressures.
